Finding The Right Person For Your Plumbing Repair

By Kenny Marcum

Whenever you need a plumbing repair it is generally urgent. You may have no time to investigate who will be the best person for the job. Therefore, you need to do your research beforehand so that you are prepared for that emergency.

Often the easiest way is to ask friends or family for their recommendations. You may, however, have your own contacts in other trades such as planning, tiling or building in general. All these contacts might be able to tell you who you should avoid using, too!

The Internet is a very helpful source of information. Directories online for registered plumbers are available as well as yellow Pages. A database will help you find all kinds of skilled people. Choose three plumbers and make sure you ply them with plenty of questions. Ask if you can view some of their completed work. If not, they may have a portfolio of photographs of their jobs.

Ask them to talk you through your job, if you already have a specific plan. They should be able to explain what the process will be, how long it will take and the cost. Ensure the quotation will include taxes and labor as well as materials. It is common to request 20% deposit to secure the booking. Two other quotes from other plumbers is important, too.

Make sure the plumber is insured. Also confirm that he is insured against any problems with surrounding neighbors. Check he is insurance-backed for completion if he goes out of business.

It takes several years to become a skilled plumber. Check that his qualifications will confirm both his level of skill and his experience. At times, further qualifications are needed before he can tackle work with specialist products like oil-fired heating.

Once he has begun your work keep a close eye on his progress. If you are unhappy with the work then keep a detailed record about punctuality, efficiency and general work ethic. In the first instance, challenge him. However, if you have been thorough in your initial research then you should be confident that you have the right person for your plumbing repair.
