Redesigning Your Family Room

By Vickie Daeley

If your family room is in desperate need of a re-design, it is probably time to call your trusted interior designer. Keep in mind that this special room should not only look spectacular when it is done, but it also should serve as a highly functional and comfortable space.

Generally, it is wise to begin by thinking about the style you are hoping to achieve. Browse online and go through magazines to find pictures that appeal to you. However, don't veer too far away from the decor already in your home. Unless you plan to transform several interior rooms, you do want to keep things somewhat consistent as far as style is concerned. So if your home features a clean, modern look, you probably don't want a family room done in rustic country furnishings. That design would look out of place.

After you have compiled a few great style ideas, it is time to hire an interior designer. You might be tempted to go it alone, but hiring a designer truly can be the best choice. After all, a professional has a degree in design, as well as a great deal of experience. This experience really shines in areas such as choosing wall colors and lighting options. These two elements alone can make all the difference in a room, and it really helps to have a professional.

Selecting the right furnishings is another challenge you will face when designing a family room. Unlike a living room or parlor, a family room sees a great deal of use, so it is wise to select sturdy pieces of furniture that are highly comfortable. Your designer will no doubt have plenty of great suggestions for furnishings and often can find pieces that you love at the best prices. You are sure to find some furnishings that fit both your style and your needs.

You probably will need to consider buying several pieces of furniture, unless you already have furnishings that work with the new design. For a family room, you typically need a large sofa accompanied by a love seat or several chairs. Other choices include sectional sofas, which can seat many people, and some can be arranged in multiple configurations. If your space is quite large, you might want to divide it up a little. You can have a seating area perfect for relaxation and another area that you use for a bar or perhaps a pool table or gaming area.

In addition to the aforementioned decisions, you also will need to plan your flooring options, storage choices and, of course, decorative accessories to add that extra sparkle. While the whole process does take time, imagine how wonderful you will feel each time you enter your beautifully redesigned family room. You will have created a relaxing retreat for yourself, your family and your friends.
