Medical Lab Technician: Finding Your Target

By Bennie Wieto

You may want to find employment as a laboratory technician if what you are looking for is a stable job and good financial rewards. As a laboratory tech, your role has something to do with the collection, testing, and analysis of specimens in order to help doctors and medical professionals diagnose an ailment so that the best course of action can be taken.

A laboratory technician generally takes part in several microscopic, chemical, biological, immunologic, bacteriological, and haematological tests. With the help of state of the art equipment such as cell counters and microscopes, lab technicians are able to perform tests and analysis on blood, urine, sputum, and other fluids from the human body.

Another worker in the clinical laboratory is referred to as a laboratory technologist and he is different from a laboratory technician in terms of the complexity of the procedures they perform. It is common for lab technicians to be supervised closely by lab technologists in their specimen preparation and during their use of sophisticated lab tools and equipment.

Getting formal training is highly recommended if you want to have a higher chance of success as a laboratory technician. You should be able to find accredited training programs being offered in vocational schools, community colleges, the Armed Forces, and even in several hospital facilities. You may choose to enroll in a certificate program or an associate's degree program depending on how far you want to go as a lab tech.

When choosing a laboratory technician training program, it is important to make sure it is accredited so that you know you're getting quality education. Agencies that accredited training programs for this career include the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES), National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

If you want to be eligible for the best employment opportunities, you should strive hard to become certified as a laboratory technician. Certification is an excellent indication of proficiency and competency. The American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCALP), and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) are some of the agencies that certify lab technicians.
