A Census Bureau report Tuesday showed that increasingly more Americans are losing the struggle to stay profitable in a tough economy that will not quell. More American's are now existing beneath the poverty threshold than ever before since the bureau began keeping the record in 1959.
Highest percentage since 1993
The countrywide poverty rate in 2010 hit 46.2 million individuals, up from 43.6 million in 2009. The number of poor Americans is the highest it has been since the records began 52 years ago. All numbers from 2010 are "approaching levels not seen since Lyndon B. Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1965." This is ridiculous, the Los Angeles Times said.
In 1993, the poverty rate was 15.1 percent. That is now where the poverty rate is again with a 0.8 percent increase from last year.
Less revenue coming in
We can also look at the median household revenue. It fell too. At the end of 2010 the average American made $49,445, which is down 2.3 percent from 2009. There was also an increase in the amount of Americans without medical insurance to 49.9 billion. A rise was shown in the amount of kids residing in poverty also. It went up to 22 percent from 20.7 percent.
Do not expect things to get better
Analysts said that the numbers will not be changing this year. Joblessness is at around 9 percent still while the nation had a financial rating downgrade.
A family of four could make up to $22,314 and still be under the poverty threshold last year. An individual had to make less than $11,139 annually. All tax credits and food stamps do not count as income. This is not how the Census Bureau calculates things. If it had, many of those counted as under the poverty line would have increased above it. Several could be pushed over with joblessness benefits also.
