Standford University 101

By Philip James

Stanford is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in the United States and the world. I could give you the Wikipedia version here, but I thought it would be better to give you the outlook of a student rather than a historian.

The environment of the university is considerably impressive and therefore, top notch among those located on the west area. The architecture shows a more exclusive and contemporary vibe to it compared to other universities of the same caliber, but I love the mission style structural design. All of the properties within the campus are certainly renowned, and Palm Drive is absolutely a sight to itself.

Stanford is considered only second to University of Moscow in terms of the campus size in the whole world. The campus provides for their students conveniently with postal service, a golf course, an excellent selection of restaurants, including the Jamba Juice for all the wheatgrass fanatics, a gas station and a large university store.

Get a bike to get around campus. I love how flat the campus is so you can ride a bike. If that is not an option, walking is beautiful but it's going to take you a bit longer. Watch out for bikes! I enjoyed walking around campus with a book in my hand. It was very relaxing, and I never got hit by a bike.

Academically, Stanford is a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. I had great professors, mentors and I loved my educational experience. Deep within the halls this place is amazing, new startups that will change the world are forming and cutting edge research that will save many lives is being performed. Small class sizes. It's about 1:6 ratio. Study abroad opportunities at Stanford owned international campuses. Stanford has internationally famous professors.

Every year, more than 34,000 prospective students apply at Standford and only 1,500 of them are accepted. 92% of those who got in belong to the top 10% of their high school classes. One other means in securing an acceptance letter is to have you parents donate a new building to the University. Most of the university students have science or engineer majors. Having said that, there are some, specifically 3,500, who have not decided what their major is yet. You are not required to declare it immediately. No need to rush declaring a major. University grounds can be described as remarkable well-kept, classic and futuristic architecture. Only 2% of people studying there do not live on campus. It offers a Campus is highly manicured, traditional and space age architecture. 98% of students live on campus. Stanford has a campus wide complimentary bus service but many still use their bikes as their mode of transportation.

Stanford students tend to be focused, creative and positive. It attracts the best of the best. The cost of tuition is $56,000 per year including tuition, room and board. No extra cost for international study or other special programs. Tuition assistance work programs are available to help reduce the finances. Nearly all students get financial aid, scholarships and loans.

I spent four formative years in Stanford and while I have a deep affection for this campus. Stanford is a school that prepares you for a life that gets better and richer with every year. Being a fan of Social Distortion and an alumni of Stanford, you can say I've lived a "charmed life".
