White Gold Jewelry

By Shari Evans

White gold looks so elegant and compatible with a diamond that it is gaining popularity over yellow gold. In both wedding and engagement rings, white gold is much preferred by both men and women due to its versatility and ability to make diamonds look more brilliant. In order to preserve and protect its beauty and durability, it is important for white gold jewelry wearers to be aware of different facts about it and steps on how they can maintain its color and shine.

About Proper Care for White Gold

All kinds of gold are naturally yellow in color but the ones that are being converted to white gold are pale yellow in color. The only element that makes it whiter and shinier is rhodium. With the presence of the white and durable rhodium metal, it can protect the fold and improve its shine. Though rhodium is durable, it can still lose its effect if the white gold jewelry is frequently used. For this, the white gold should be brought in for two rhodium plating per year.

There are many harsh chemicals in our home and surroundings which can inflict an irreparable damage to your white gold jewelry. Take it off before doing some household chores or swimming in the pool which has been concentrated with chlorine and other chemicals. Whenever you will keep some of your white gold jewelry, place them on different cloth bags to avoid them from bumping and scratching each other. Use a velvet or cotton to ensure that they won't be damaged while being kept.

Cleaning White Gold

There are many chemicals that can potentially harm your white gold in long term. Make a research about those and avoid them from having a direct contact with the jewelry. If you want to clean it, go to your local jeweler first or the boutique where you have bought the jewelry and ask about the correct cleaning solution for white gold. It is important for you to use the right cleaner for this particular kind of metal to protect its overall quality.

For a safer cleaning, you only have to make use of gentle soap, water and a soft toothbrush. Place a half cup of lukewarm water in a small bowl, add the soap and mix well. Dip the white gold jewelry and let it be soaked in the mixture. After 15 minutes, remove it from the solution and scrub it gently and thoroughly with the tooth brush. Rinse with warm water and make use of a soft cotton or leave it to dry on its own.
