Learn How To Properly Maintain Your Residential Roof

By Selena Chery

Your home's roof is designed to last for many years. However, if not properly maintained, you could drastically shorten its lifespan. Here are some simple tips from your local Chicago roofing company, to keep your roof in good condition.

Every year you should inspect your roof. It is not good enough to check it out from the ground, as you will miss many things. Climb a ladder and get up on the roof to inspect it. Look for signs of wear and tear, discoloration, and obvious problem spots.

Inspect all the shingles and look to see if any are torn or broken. If so, you must make repairs as soon as possible. If you have no spare shingles you can buy a bundle from your home improvement center and replace all bad shingles. Patching tar should only be used for temporary shingle repair, as it causes water to pond.

While you inspect your roof, you should check out and clean the gutters. First, make sure there are no large obstructions like toys or clumps of debris. You may be able to flush gutters with your garden hose. While flushing, look at seams and downspouts to make sure that nothing is leaking and water is properly draining.

When you notice trees or limbs near your roof, they should be removed or at least trimmed. This is important because heavy branches can fall on and damage the roof, and even small branches can cause damages. Use caution when you trim trees and if you want to avoid any problems, call a professional tree service.

Check all vents, pipes, chimneys, flashing, and other places that could leak, and reseal when necessary. Of course, you can always contact your Chicago roofers for an inspection. If any problems are discovered, they can be repaired before your roof starts to leak. Your roofers have years of experience and provide guaranteed work.
