Outdoor Landscaping Ideas And Retaining Wall Blocks

By Darren Hartley

As the demand for outdoor living remains strong, outdoor landscaping ideas pick up some of the slack of a weakened housing market. From a deck or patio area to a true outdoor living space complete with a full kitchen, is how the backyard living concept has evolved.

With the rise in popularity of outdoor living spaces, it comes as no surprise that simple outdoor landscaping ideas involving structures such as gazebos, arbors, trellises and pergolas are more in demand. For the more fortunate, deck and and patio areas come with a pool. For the very fortunate, eating, sitting and living areas come with surround sound and HDTV.

A thing of the past is simple outdoor landscaping ideas. It is in terms of defining spaces with walls, ceilings and roofs in an open sense to blend with the outdoors, that people are now prospecting on. From practically 0% business to being the single largest segment of the contracting business, pergolas has taken off over the last few years.

Cap-block finishing parts must be used in building retaining wall blocks. To keep the water out of the basement, the wall next to the house must be sealed. Backfilling should always be done in layers, for structural reasons. Backfilling should be done in compacted 8, 10 and 12 inch increments against the wall. This will prevent ending up with a sunken feature.

When building retaining wall blocks meant to hold back soil that slopes down to it, gravel must be installed behind the wall with a pipe and filter fabric. The direction of the water to where it is wanted to go is enabled with this installation.

It is sometimes better to do a curve on the retaining wall blocks rather than keep them straight. A garden hose may be placed along the area where the retaining wall blocks are wanted. Following the curve of the hose, four inches are then dug up in front of them.
